Austrade

Program: Export Marketing Development Grant (EMDG)

Program details: The objective of the annual EMDG is to provide financial assistance to existing or aspiring exporters with annual turnover of $50 million and below. The grant reimburses up to half of marketing expenses incurred while promoting the firm's products to residents of other countries, with total costs to be at least $10,000 and at the most $20,000 over two years.

Program: Research and Development Tax Incentive

Program details: The R&D tax incentive, replacing the R&D Tax Concession, aims to encourage firms to conduct R&D in Australia. It is comprised of two components: a 45% refundable R&D tax offset for companies with annual turnover of less than $20 million; and a 40% non-refundable R&D tax offset for all other eligible companies (unused offset amounts can be carried forward). Businesses can opt-in to receive quarterly tax credits if they earn less than $20 million.

Important note: From 1 January 2014, businesses turning over more than $20 billion will no longer be eligible for this incentive. However those generating less than $20 million annually will enjoy an uncapped, fully-refundable offset if experiencing a tax loss.

Program: Small Business Support Line (SBSL)

Program details: The SBSL provides small business owners with a point of contact to access information and referral services to improve business management practices. The SBSL connects owners with the Business Enterprise Centres across Australia as well as with state and territory government programs and services.

AusIndustry

Program: Certain Inputs to Manufacture (CIM)

Program details: The CIM program provides manufacturers with import duty concessions on eligible imported raw materials and intermediate goods. These goods must demonstrate a performance advantage in producing an end product over similar goods produced in Australia.

AusIndustry

Program: Clean Technology Investment Program

Program details: The program provides manufacturers with grants ranging from $25,000 to more than $10 million to help them invest in energy-efficient capital equipment and low-emission technologies or processes. Applicants will need to demonstrate how their project will contribute to a low-carbon Australian manufacturing industry. Manufacturers emitting more than 25,000 tonnes of covered emissions annually are also eligible for a dollar-for-dollar funding.

Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR)

Program: New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS)

Program details: The NEIS is a self-employment program delivered by Job Services Australia, which helps eligible job seekers become people become self-supporting and independent of Centrelink by establishing and running their own business. The NEIS provides successful applicants with small business training, advice and mentoring, as well as ongoing income support for 52 weeks.

Program: Enterprise Connect

Program details: Enterprise Connect offers businesses advice and support at a number of business advisory centres across the country. Advice includes a comprehensive business review at no charge and a tailored advisory service at half the cost.

Program: Early Stage Commercialisation

Program details: This program provides eligible businesses with the funding ($50,000 - $2 million) to bring a new product, procedure or service to market. Eligible businesses are required to provide 50% of costs. Eligible expenditure includes labour, contracting, plant, prototyping and IP protection funding.
